I counsel individuals, couples and families.  I do not discriminate against any particular individuals or partnerships and have experience in counselling LBTQ clients and  same sex couples. In my opinion, love is love, no matter how it is expressed.

Counselling Methods

Each client and client situation is unique and as such my methods of therapy differ depending on the needs of the client and what we agree may be helpful. The following are some of the theories and methods that I have understanding of and find them therapeutically helpful:

  • Interpersonal Theory which links expression of emotion, patterns of behaviour, experiences, the therapeutic relationship and clients wishes/desires
  • Solution Focused Counselling which is focused on an individuals’ strengths and what is possible and changeable vs what is not
  • Attachment theory which helps to create awareness of patterns of behaviour developed through our early experiences within our Family of Origin
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) a structured therapy that promotes awareness of the interconnection of our thinking patterns, emotion and behaviour
  • Relaxation Techniques: deep breathing, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, self soothing and self awareness
  • Narrative Therapy which is helpful to “story and re-story” and develop understanding of life events and patterns of behaviour
  • Emotionally Focussed Therapy (EFT) to look at how we react and relate emotionally to one another
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) looking at how our attitudes can prevent us from moving forward
  • Mindfulness based cognitive therapy which looks at changing the way we relate to the mind, living in the now rather than in the past or future, compassion toward ourselves and others, living with gratitude and other teachings from the Buddhist tradition

Mindfulness Based Therapies

Mindfulness Based TherapiesI will often combine techniques for the best possible outcome.  I lean toward using mindfulness a lot as I have seen incredible improvements made in people who adopt this mindset.  I have taken additional courses in Mindfulness Baaed Cognitive Therapy. In my experience, many people who adopt mindfulness, go on to achieve previously unattainable measures of peace and happiness.

I base everything I do on kindness and compassion. I do not judge or take sides, but I do encourage clients to take responsibility for their actions.  I will challenge you.  As a therapist I cannot sit by and watch you repeat destructive patterns of behaviours or continue with dysfunctional thought processes without challenging you on it.  But I promise to do it in a kind and compassionate way.

Positive Psychology

I am a huge fan of Martin Seligman who is the Director of the Positive Psychology Centre at Penn State University and the author of numerous books on happiness.  Basically Seligman advocates that we should be helping clients not just to be free from mental distress, but also to achieve happiness in their lives.

In my work I use a number of Seligman’s techniques, as well as other leaders in the positive psychology field, to assist clients to change habitual mindsets and really find the missing joy in their lives.

Treatment / Goal Setting

I will make a treatment / action plan with  you and we will continually revise and evaluate how it is going.  You will have work to do at home as coming to therapy once a week is a great first step but, unfortunately, just a first step.  The hard work begins at home when you practice implementing real change.
